I was in a baking mood the other day and my kids have been requesting that I make cinnamon rolls. So, I made a big batch of them. Cinnamon rolls take time to make and I don’t often have the time it takes to make them. So, when I make them, I bake a big batch and freeze most of them.
I have tried several different ways to freeze them over the years. Most of the times they dried out too much. I just wasn’t happy with how they were after I froze them. After trying several different ways to freeze them I have figure out what I think works best.
I have found that freezing just a few together, instead of a whole bunch works better. I also find that foil works better than freezing them in a pan or with plastic wrap.
Here is what I do.
I lay two pieces of foil out and place my cinnamon rolls on it like this.
Then I fold up the foil to cover the rolls.
I then place the foil package in a ziploc type bag. I label and date them and I freeze them until we are ready to defrost and eat them.
How do you freeze your cinnamon rolls?

Those look great! Do you freeze them with the icing on?
Thanks for sharing!

Yes, I freeze them with the icing on.

So glad you posted this. I’ve only just made my first batch of cinnamon rolls this weekend. I kept putting it off because I couldn’t figure out how to get it done for breakfast in the morning. If I can bake them ahead and freeze, then all I have to do is heat them up for breakfast in the morning; definitely a time saver.
Thanks so much.

I was wondering if you had ever tried freezing the rolls before you bake them. Like you find in the freezer section of the grocery store? If so did you flash freeze them first or freeze them in the pan? Thank you!
Lynn
Theresa, I have not had good luck freezing any dough. I just don’t like the way dough turns out when frozen, so I have never thought to try it with cinnamon rolls. If you try it let me know how it turns out.
Lynn
Also, Theresa if I did try it I would probably flash freeze them.

Any tips for reheating the rolls? I’m not sure what to do with my frozen buns. 🙂

Allie, I usually defrost them the night before and just leave them out on the counter to defrost so that we can have them for breakfast. You can eat them just like this, but we prefer to microwave them for 45 seconds or so each, and warm them one at a time. Just to warm them a little bit. I hope that helps.

I am excited to make these! I usually double all my baking so I have some to freeze (breads and such) Thanks for helping me out in the freezing dept!

Lynn,
Thank you for the info! I bought the Best cinnamon rolls,(mine never turn out that well) it was great to find someone who does this. They came in an aluminum foil pan. I will cover them on top with alum.foil & put back into the outer plastic container. by the way, how long will they last in the freezer?
Lynn
@Lynn-not The Lynn, I am glad the information helped. I have frozen cinnamon rolls for years and it works great.
