This chocolate custard is one of the richest and creamiest desserts that I have made in a long time.
Seriously, this chocolate dessert is really good. It is also really easy to make.
Chocolate custard is basically a baked chocolate pudding that has a little different texture than a regular pudding. It is also a bit different than a normal custard because it contains chocolate.
So, if you have tried custards before and not liked them, this is a version that I think you will enjoy.
I liked this served on its own, but it is also good served with a little whipped cream on top.
Chocolate Custard
A few ingredients are all you need for this classic chocolate custard recipe. Rich, creamy, and delicious.
Ingredients
- ¾ cup cream
- ¾ cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 3 egg yolks
- 1/3 cup sugar
- pinch of salt
- ½ cup semi sweet chocolate chips, melted ( I melt them in the microwave, at 50% power, stirring every 30 seconds)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
- Bring the cream and milk to a boil and remove from heat. Add in vanilla. Set aside.
- In a bowl beat egg yolks, sugar, and salt. Beat in melted chocolate. Gradually which in cream/milk mixture.
- Divide mixture among 4- 6 ounce ramekins. You can use a different size ramekin, just adjust the cooking time for a large or smaller ramekin.
- Place ramekins in a 9x13 pan that has been filled with ½ inch of hot water. (You are creating a water bath.)
- Bake custards for 40-45 minutes or until slightly wobbly. Remove dishes from hot water, let cool, and refrigerate until completely cooled or over night.

I want a spoon so I can dig in right now!

Hi Lynn – what kind of milk do you use (skim, 1%, 2%, whole) in the custard?
Lynn
@Michelle, I used 1% but I think any of them would work, since the cream already adds a lot of creaminess to this.

I’ve never had chocolate custard. It looks really good!

Now, that looks so good! I remember chocolate custard made by Gerber Baby Food. My sister and I loved when my mom would give us a jar of our baby brothers’ custard. I am sure this recipe will be so much better than that was! Thanks!
Emily
Oooh yum! I think I’m going to have to get some ramekins just to make this 🙂

That looks delicious!! And I love that it is so easy to make. The only thing I would be worried about is I would not be able to control myself from eating them all!!

What are ramekins? I have never heard of these before. Is there something else I can use if I can’t find them where I live, like something simple, not hard to find? Thanks!!
Lynn
@Carry-ann, Ramekins are the little white dishes shown in the picture above. Basically they are oven proof small dishes that are about one serving size. They come in different colors and sizes, and also come in glass. Places like walmart and target carry them as well as other home goods type stores, but you really can use anything oven proof. If you have a small coffee cup that is oven proof it will work. You can also make this in a larger casserole type dish, as long as you can still do the water bath method with a larger pan. You would just have to adjust the cooking time and it might change the texture just a little cooking it in a larger pan. I hope that helps.

That really does look so creamy. I know my kids would adore a bowl of this.
