what-is-it

It is Wednesday which means it is time for another What Is It Wednesday.

WIIW 32

This week’s What Is It Wednesday item was a bit hard to photograph since it is so small, but I hope it is is good enough for you all to guess what it is.

I am guessing that some of you that are into more health food and whole foods type cooking will know exactly what this is, but it might be harder for some of you.

I have actually had it in my cupboard for awhile, but have only used it in a few things. It is also one of those foods that I might need some help and suggestions from all of you if I am going to get my family to love it.

WIIW 32-1

Here it is next to a penny so that you can get an idea of how small it is.

Do you know what it is?

What Is It Wednesday is a series that I started back in 2011 as a way to encourage my family to try new things. It also became a fun way to share new and unusual foods with my readers. So each week I share a new food that my family tried, how we liked it, and how I cooked it. I also often ask you to guess what it is and then the next week I follow up with the correct answer.

Wow, talk about tiny! I was going to say black sesame seeds, but I think they’re too small. Chia seeds, maybe? I have no idea what to do with chia seeds, but I’ve heard you can add them to things like granola.

Oh! If they are poppy seeds, I have the best recipe for poppy seed bread. You’re whole family will love it!

Black sesame seeds. I thought chia seeds first, but mine always have multiple shades. These all seem to be very black. I think poppy seeds would be rounder. So…I’m going with black sesame seeds. I have some in my cupboard for when I was all set to make a copycat Bangkok Curry. Never got that done. 🙂

My first thought was rabbit turds! No, just kidding!!! 🙂 Actually, my first thought was Chis Seeds. Am I right? I see some are guessing Black Sesame Seeds, but since I’m not familiar with them, I’ll just leave it at the chia seed guess…

I thought chia seeds…but I agree with the others that they are usually multiple colors and these are very black. So…hm. I guess I’ll still stick with chia but black sesame will be my tie for first choice. Is that vague enough? 😉

I don’t know for sure. I’ve never seen the coin used for scale (I’m English), but they look like black onion seeds to me. If they are, I love them. The Middle East shop and bakery at the top of my street mixes them with sesame seeds and sprinkles bread with them before baking.

A penny was just the first thing I thought to grab since I thought most of my readers would know what it is. Next time I will try to come up with something different. Maybe a ruler or something would work better.

My first thought was black quinoa but it would not be all black. So my guess would be black sesame.

Chia seeds. I have some in my cupboard, but I think I have only used them once a long time ago. I have heard to put them in smoothies, but have not tried it. I would love recipes.
