Bourbon Honey Glazed Ham is one of the best glazes for ham that I have made.
We have a lot of hams and I have tried many ham glazes over the years. I rarely end up making the same one twice.
I am always looking for something better, but I finally found a ham glaze that my family loved and one that I will definitely be making again and again.
The honey, apple juice, and brown sugar in this glaze really helps it caramelize and gives it a really nice flavor. And I am sure the bourbon doesn’t hurt either.
The combination of flavors in this is amazing and we loved it.
Bourbon Honey Glazed Ham
After years of raising hogs and cooking ham this is my favorite go to glaze for ham.
Ingredients
- ½ cup bourbon
- ½ cup apple juice
- 1 ½ cups browned sugar
- ¼ cup honey
- 1/8 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
- Ham( you will coat the ham with this the last 30 minutes of cooking)
Instructions
- In a saucepan combine the bourbon and apple juice and bring to a boil. Cook over medium to medium high heat until reduced to about ½ cup.
- Remove from heat and add brown sugar, honey, and cayenne pepper. Stir to form a paste.
- Remove the ham from the oven about 30 minutes before it is finished cooking.
- Score the ham, if it is not already scored. You just want to slice through the very outer layer of the ham to help the glaze soak in.
- Rub paste all over the top and sides of the ham.
- Bake 20-30 minutes more or until the glaze is glossy and darkened.
- Let ham sit a few minutes before slicing.

This sounds tasty! Hubby usually glazes a ham for Thanksgiving with a blowtorch (he used to do that for Honey-Baked Ham, and he said playing with the blowtorch was the best part of the job), and I bet he’ll be interested in this recipe. 🙂

Mmm… sounds tasty! I posted my ham glaze recipe today too. My uses orange flavored rum. 🙂

We usually buy the spiral hams that only really need to be heated and served. One year I cooked them in sprite but that wasn’t that big of a difference that it would be worth using pop (not a fan of soft drinks). What sort of hams would you recommend I use this on? I know you raise your own, I envy you!
Lynn
@Kate, Spiral hams are usually very good, although it has been a while since I cooked one. Most store bought hams come with a glaze and I always have preferred to throw that out and make my own. I think a nice homemade glaze gives is a caramelized texture to the outside. But yes, you can cook hams without any glaze.

This glaze looks and sounds great! I shared this recipe on my blog post, Must Try Tuesday…

Thanks for sharing!

What kind of ham did you get that is not spiral ham? It looks so thick and much better than the spiral variety!
Lynn
We raise hogs, so no that is not a spiral ham like you buy at the store. It is a ham from our own hogs, and it a little different. It is more of an old fashioned type ham. I hope that helps answer your question.
Mandy
Hmmm…we don’t raise our own hogs, but that is impressive! I can ask the meat market if they can offer me something comparable to what you made, rather than the spiral ham.
Lynn
Yes, we enjoy our hams, but this glaze is good on any ham and works well on spiral ham as well. 🙂
