This week I made some frosting for a cake and I decided I did not need it all. So, I used some of it to make these for my kids.
Graham crackers with frosting. Have you ever had these? They make a great, easy, and frugal snack. Not the healthiest, but they are a great treat for once in awhile.
My mom used to give us these when I was a kid. If she did not have anything else for a dessert or snack she would give us these. She could easily whip up some frosting with just a few ingredients and we usually had graham crackers. So, why not put the two together?
My mom was great about coming up with ideas for frugal snacks. She used what she had and she got creative. She would make home made trail mix and give it to us. I make something similar for my kids. Sometimes she made the “trail mix” or snack mix out of cold cereal that she had bought on sale. She might use cheerios, raisins, and peanuts and that was all. If she had a different cereal, she would use it instead. It was an easy, fun,and frugal snack or dessert to give us. It wasn’t fancy, but we enjoyed it.
Another thing my mom used to do and I also do occasionally is to make a snack out of pie crust.
Now, again this is not the healthiest snack, but it makes a good snack or dessert once in a while. When you make pie you usually have a few scraps left over. My mom would roll these scraps out and put it on a cookie sheet. She would then spread a little butter on it and sprinkle it with cinnamon and sugar. Bake at 350 for around 10 minutes. This will take more or less time depending on how thick you roll the crust. Break into pieces and serve to your kids.
Next time your kids want a snack look around and be creative. Fun snacks do not have to cost a lot.

My dad used to make the graham crackers with frosting snack. Loved it! Thanks for the reminder. I’ll have to make them sometime soon for my little one. I like the idea of the extra pie crust, also. I usually make a little cinnamon and raisin or apple roll-up with the extra. I also make “trail mix” with whatever we have on hand. Love the ideas, though. Thanks!

That pie crust snack looks terrific! I could really learn a lesson from your mom. I have a hard time coming up with snacks with what I have in the cupboards. 🙂

We do the graham crackers with frosting, too! But we use CHOCOLATE frosting. My husband loves it :o)

ps. I don’t know if it’s just where we live but it seems like the price of graham crackers has REALLY shot up. Have you noticed that?
Lynn
Sarah, I have not noticed a huge price difference, but they have gone up some. However some other grocery prices have shot up.

We used to make both of these 🙂 Yummy!
ps – I really like your new header.

Yes, we use to eat these as a snack when we were young. My husband will still ask me for these treats once in awhile when he’s looking for something sweet. You could probably make ahead and freeze, too!
Thanks for sharing!

Lynn,
The graham crackers with icing and sugared pie crust definitely remind me of my childhood. I fondly remember my Mom making both of these.

My Mom made us the pie crust with cinnamon sugar too! I was hungry for it yesterday. I think I was a little homesick. 🙂

I remember I took graham crackers and frosting to work once, and they all laughed and said I was such a pregnant lady. (I was 6 months along.) Its funny, but I haven’t even thought about eating those for years, but I do remember it being a good albeit super sugary snack.

My Mom made the graham cracker snacks using powdered sugar and milk for the “frosting.”
She and my Grandma always used the leftover pie crust dough to make the snacks you mention. They always called them “dog ears.” Cute!

I would love the recipe for the home made frosting if you would like to share. We had a neighbor that made these when we were young and I don’t think store frosting would be the same.

You are right, canned frosting works, but it is not the same. Homemade frosting is better! Here are my two favorite homemade frosting recipes. We make them both all the time and the leftovers are great on graham crackers. The chocolate frosting recipe is an older recipe that I posted and I need to update the pictures. They are not great pictures, but we love that frosting. Both frosting recipes would be pretty easy to make in a smaller batch. Just half the recipe. My mom used to just make a simple powdered sugar, butter, and milk frosting, but she never measured. She just made it until it looked right, so I don’t have the recipe for the exact one she used to make us. I hope that helps and that you enjoy it! https://www.lynnskitchenadventures.com/2009/07/cream-cheese-frosting.html and https://www.lynnskitchenadventures.com/2008/06/the-best-chocolate-frosting.html
