Homemade Tootsie Rolls anyone?!
Today’s recipe shows how varied this homemade series will be. We have covered homemade hamburger helper, homemade onion soup mix, and now homemade tootsie rolls.
My goal with this series is to create recipes for everyone. Some will be less expensive than the store bought version. Some will be healthier. And some, like today’s, will be just plain fun.
My recipe for homemade tootsie rolls is one that is actually featured in my Cooking 101 for kids ebook, but I knew I also needed to share it for my homemade series. I mean really, what can be more fun than homemade tootsie rolls?!
I am the first to admit these are probably not less expensive than the originals, especially if you buy them on sale or in a large package. And I can easily say these are not healthy, but seriously these are so much fun to make.
My kids love them.
We also call these chocolate play dough because the dough is fun to play with. My kids loved making letters, shapes, and spelling their names with these.
I think these would be so much fun for a kids party, or play day, because it would be so much fun for kids to play with this and then eat it.
Now for the recipe. Plan ahead for this one, because the dough does need to sit before using.
Homemade Tootsie Rolls
A fun make at home version of a favorite candy. A great thing to make with kids because you can play with your food.
Ingredients
- 2 cups chocolate chips
- ½ cup corn syrup
- ¾ teaspoon warm water
- ¼ teaspoon orange extract (Not necessary, but does add that extra depth of flavor, that makes it more like the original.)
- 1 cup powdered sugar
Instructions
- Line a 9x13 pan with plastic wrap
- Melt the chocolate in the microwave at 50% power and stirring every 30 seconds until melted.
- Stir in the remaining ingredients. Stir well. This will be thick and almost dough-like.
- Press into the 9x13 pan that has been lined with plastic wrap. Cover the pan with plastic wrap and let sit overnight. The dough needs time to set up and firm up so do not skip the step of sitting overnight.
- The next day remove pieces of the dough and roll into small logs or pieces.
- My kids like to play with this like play dough and the fun is that it is edible. It does get soft quickly though as you play with it and roll it around.

This looks like so much fun! Do you think brown rice syrup would work ok in place of corn syrup?i love tootsie rolls but couldn’t eat them because they have allergens in them for my kids. This recipe solves that! Thanks!!
Lynn
I just bought brown rice syrup for the first time, but have not used it yet. I am hoping that in some of my recipes I can use it in place of corn syrup, but need to experiment with it. In fact, I hope to do a post soon asking for tips, thoughts, advice for using it. In this recipe I think it is the texture it helps give it and of course the sweetness. If you have used it in other recipes in place of corn syrup, I say try it in this and see. You just might want to make a 1/2 or 1/4 batch to try it and see. That way you would not be wasting as much ingredients if it did not work. If you try it I would love to hear how it goes.

Thank you so much for letting me know how much you enjoyed them. When I post a homemade or copycat version we always think it tastes great and close to the real thing, and I always hope others agree. I love comments like yours because that lets me know others love them too. Thanks!!!

I would love to try these with raw honey. Do you think the texture would be the same?
Rebekah
Of course I would melt on stove not microwave to keep the raw properties…
Lynn
I am not sure on that since the honey has a totally different consistency than the powdered sugar. I might be worth trying a half batch or small batch to see.
Rebekah
I mean in place of corn syrup. We’re making these this week to give away on Valentine’s Day. I’ll let you know how they turn out. 🙂
Rebekah
We have made these several times…replacing corn syrup with raw honey. They have turned out fabulous, kids and adults love them. On Valentines’ we gave each child in our homeschool co-op class their initial made out of the tootsie roll. I’m making a batch tomorrow to give to our VBS kids as part of their take-home-end-of-week treat. Thanks for the recipe!
