I love salmon. Growing up in the northwest probably has something to do with that. I enjoy salmon so much I could eat it several times a week, but not everyone in my family enjoys it as much as I do.
My favorite way to eat salmon is to grill it or to just cook it in the oven with a little lemon juice, salt, and pepper, but since my family does not enjoy it as much as I do, they prefer if I use it in things like quiches, salmon burgers, salads, or soup. So, those are the ways I usually serve it.
This recipe is easy and less expensive than many salmon recipes because it contains canned salmon. Canned salmon is an easy and more frugal way to incorporate salmon into our diets.
The healthiest way to eat salmon is just to grill, steam, or bake it. I know this soup recipe is not the healthiest way to eat salmon, but it is really good, and fairly healthy because it is a one pot meal. I usually just serve this by itself, but you could also serve this with bread or a salad.

Salmon Chowder
An easy and delicious soup for any time of year.
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons of oil
- ½ onion chopped
- 2 cups peeled diced potatoes
- 1 carrot, peeled and diced
- 2 cups chicken broth
- 14 ( or 16 ounces) canned salmon, liquid drained off ( I prefer to use the boneless skinless canned salmon because I like it better, but you can use the reg canned salmon also)
- 1 - 12 ounce can evaporated milk
- salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup frozen corn
Instructions
- In a large pan cook onion in oil until tender.
- Add potatoes, carrots, and broth. Bring to boil and reduce heat to simmer.
- Cover and cook for about 20 minutes or until potatoes and carrots are almost tender.
- Stir in salmon, evaporated milk, corn, and cheese.
- Cook about five more minutes or until heated through and the corn, potatoes, and carrots are tender. Serve and enjoy!

My mom makes salmon patties with just the red canned salmon, eggs, and cracker crumbs, and they are heavenly! We totally grew up on them!
When I make it at home, I usually turn to this Sweet and Sour Salmon recipe.

I love finding canned salmon recipes – thank you! Fresh salmon here is at least double the price of any other fish, but canned is very reasonable. Our favourite is a salmon loaf recipe adapted from Allrecipes, it even doubles and freezes well.

My husband and I both grew up in Atlantic Canada and love seafood, so my Valentine’s “gift” to my husband has been to make a divine seafood chowder for dinner on Valentine’s. However, unexpectedly last week, my husband was laid off from his job. Therefore, it didn’t look like I was going to be able to make seafood chowder this year, as it’s not cheap to make :). However, God heard the desires of my heart and had you post this recipe this week … for which I have all the ingredients in my pantry all ready!! I grew up in NW Oregon, but now live in Oklahoma. I really miss the seafood and fish we had access to growing up. I hope your husband finds work soon. Growing up my father was laid off several times, those times were difficult on us as a family, but the struggles we had drew us closer to each other. Looking back now I would not trade those years for anything. Those times of struggles taught me so much. I hope and pray your husband finds work soon. So the verdict is officially in … I made this last night for our Valentine’s dinner and it was excellent!! My favorite way to have salmon is simple grilling of steaks or filets, but rarely do we get a good fresh fish price so canned it is. Salmon patties is generally what I fix. This is definitely going to be a new family winter soup favorite.
