I love vintage recipes and today I am sharing one for Better Homes and Gardens Fudge Brownie Recipe.
My in-laws downsized last year and moved into a retirement center. When they did my mother in-law gave my daughters and me her cookbooks.
Some of them were newer ones, but most of them were at least 30 years old. Some were much older.
I love vintage cookbooks, so a box full of vintage cookbooks was so much fun.
My girls took a few of the cookbooks with my mother in-laws hand written notes in them. I am so glad that they wanted them. They will treasure them in years to come.
I kept all the fun vintage ones that they did not want. I loved looking through them. Some included recipes that I will never make, but some of the recipes are basic recipes that sound really good.
Over the years I have shared recipes from my cookbook challenge. I even did a Martha Stewart Cooking Challenge where I challenged myself to cook from my Martha Stewart cookbooks and magazines.
I thought it would be fun to cook and share some of the recipes from my mother-in-law’s vintage cookbooks.
We are starting with vintage brownies.
I am calling these vintage brownies because they come from a 1968 Better Homes and Gardens cookbook. Since I was born in the 1970s, I am not sure I would consider 1968 vintage, but I know a lot of people would consider the 1960s vintage.
This Better Homes and Gardens Brownie Recipe is fairly basic. A lot of recipes have changed over the years, but some recipes have not changed much at all.
This Better Homes and Gardens Brownie recipe is an example of a recipe that has not changed much.
It is a fairly classic brownie recipe, so I figured it would turn out well.
These brownies turned out great. They were a lot like a brownie mix brownie or a homemade brownie mix brownie.
We loved them! They will now be a go to brownie recipe for me.
And yes they worked gluten free! I am sharing exactly how I made them gluten free.
I love looking through vintage cookbooks. The pictures of old kitchens and foods are so fun to look at.

- Stir until well combined.

Notes
Because this recipe is from 1968, when microwaves were not a common household item, the original recipe has you melting the butter and chocolate in a pan on the stove. I updated the recipe to melt the chocolate and butter in the microwave.
For the gluten free version I tested the recipe with Bob's Red Mill 1 to 1 gluten free flour blend. Other blends may work, but they have not been tested.

I’m thrilled to find this recipe! My mom gave me this cookbook when I moved out 20 years ago. I’ve been try to find it for awhile, I would modify the recipe though to be gluten free (so funny that you also did that) i however would use Koda Mochiko Sweet Rice Flour (this was back when gluten free wasn’t common). They come out amazing, professional quality I’ve been told by guests. Thanks for posting this!!

I found the exact recipe book I grew up with at an antique store and bought it just for this recipe. I found the same one online after it got dirty and falling apart from use. I am going to laminate the new one! I should have this recipe memorized by now. Thanks!
Lynn
Laminating it is a great idea! Vintage recipes are some of the best recipes!
