Homemade french onion dip brings back memories of my childhood. I have always loved chips and dip and they were a real treat when I was growing up.
My mom would occasionally buy a bag of potato chips and a few containers of dip and we would enjoy them for a fun treat. My favorite kinds of dip for her to buy were clam dip, yes that one is a northwest thing, and onion dip.
Over the years I have occasionally bought onion dip, but none of them are quite like the ones I remember eating as a kid. I finally decided that the best way to find what I was looking for was to make my own. This way I could adjust the onion, seasoning, and the other flavors of the dip to be just the way I like them.
After trying and adjusting a few things I came up with a version that I love.
When I recently served this homemade onion dip to my kids they decided that is should be called “too good dip”. They kept saying that it was just too good and that they could not stop eating it and I agree this onion dip was really good.
This is a perfect recipe to use when entertaining or having a large group of people over. My family would love to snack on this during a football game and it would be so easy to make ahead and serve to family and friends.
Homemade French Onion Dip
Make your French onion dip at home. It is way better than anything you can get in a box or at the store.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons of oil
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 cup sour cream
- 8 ounce of cream cheese
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
- ½ teaspoon salt ( or more to taste)
- ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Instructions
- Cook onion in oil until very soft and tender and slightly browned. This will take about 10 minutes.
- Add garlic and cook for about 30 seconds.
- Add water and cook until the water is mostly evaporated. Do not skip this step, this will help deglaze the pan and loosen up the bits of onion that are full of flavor.
- In a food processor mix the onion mixture with remaining ingredients until smooth.
- Refrigerate for several hours before serving.
- If you do not have a food processor this can just be mixed together until very smooth. However, it will not be as smooth as it will be made in a food processor.

mmmm I need to try this! I’ve never seen a recipe for onion dip that doesn’t include onion soup mix.
Margaret
This sounds delicious! I might have to try this.

I love onion dip but usually I’ve only had the one where you mix dried soup mix to sour cream. I’ve been looking for something that doesn’t use the processed stuff; so I’m glad you shared this!
Football is coming, so this is the perfect time to try this out. Thanks, Lynn!

Onion dip and potato chips with ridges is one of my favorite snacks! We love to take it out on the boat and just devoured some over the July 4th weekend. Thanks for sharing such a delicious looking homemade version. No more tubs from the grocery for me!

For those of you looking for a homemade version of onion soup mix for things, try this:
8 tsp. dried onion flakes
1 tsp. onion powder
1/4 tsp. Mrs. Dash
1/8 tsp. celery salt
a pinch of sugar
a pinch of white pepper
This equals 1 package of the processed soup mix. I have used it in dips, crockpot recipes, and anything that calls for the soup mix.

Awesome – thanks for sharing this! We are scheduled to bring snacks for Bible Study and hubs said he wanted to bring chips and dip and I just hated not being able to make something. You have saved me with this recipe! 🙂

Wow! This sounds sooo good. I think I might have to make it for the football game this weekend!!! I think the part i like most about this is that I have everything but the cream cheese on hand!!

Can’t wait to try this…it does sound too good! I was fascinated to hear you also grew up on clam dip. My mother used to make a clam dip for her bridge club that kept me hanging around the refreshments table. Do you have a recipe for that as well? I’ve never been able to duplicated it. I’m pretty sure she used clam juice instead of real clam bits.
Cindi
Thanks for the recipe. I, like others, am glad there is no onion soup mix in it! Blending it smooth will be nice too!
Lynn
@Cindi, No onion soup mix here. The taste of real onion is much better. 🙂 And yes one of the things that i like about this is that it is smooth. I hope you enjoy it!

I just made this dip and it’s incredible! I’ve had a block of cream cheese sitting in my fridge for a month now and no idea what to do with it. Thanks so much for the recipe! It’s going to be my go to for family gatherings now.
Lynn
I am so glad that you like it. It is almost too good! I do not make it often because when I do, I can not stop eating it. 🙂
Anna
How many cups does this make and how many people does it serve?
Lynn
I makes about 2 1/2 cups or so. If you are using this as a chip and dip appetizer type dish, with other food available, I would say it would serve 12 or so. I have used this with other appetizer type foods for a large group and served that way it will serve quite a few. If you are serving it by itself as an appetizer or snack, I would say around 6-8. I hope that helps.

Are the sour cream and cream cheese gluten free? Also, could you tell me the name of a gluten free worcestershire sauce? We have celiac. Thanks
Lynn
I love this dip because it is regular food that is easy to make gluten free just by reading labels. On the sour cream and cream cheese, in general both are gluten free, but just read labels to be sure. On the worcestershire sauce, here is the information for the brand I use and what they say on their site about it. I hope that helps and that you enjoy the dip. https://www.leaperrins.com/products/the-original-worcestershire-sauce.aspx

HEAVEN! Thanks for the recipe!
Lynn
I am glad you enjoyed it!

Hi Lynn- I’m looking to make this recipe this weekend, would you recommend making this the day before? Some things taste better the next day when the flavors have a chance to sit longer and it would be easier for me to make the day before too!
Lynn
You can make it the day of, but yes it does have a little better flavor made a day or at least a few hours ahead of time.
