The Best Chocolate Frosting is easy to make and is delicious on just about any cake or cupcake. This frosting makes even a box cake mix taste like a homemade cake.
This frosting is my all time favorite frosting. I have been making it for years. The secret is the combination of cream cheese and butter and beating it for a long time.
I use this for yellow cakes, chocolate cakes, 9×13 cakes, cupcakes, layer cakes, and more.
I made a Chocolate Zucchini Cake to take to a church dinner and used this frosting. (I need to share that cake recipe soon!) I don’t usually frost this cake, but since I am taking it somewhere I decided to splurge and frost it.
It is a no fail, quick, and easy frosting. I know this one will always turn out and that it makes even the simplest cake taste better.
If you need a chocolate fix give it a try. And if you have just a little left over, try it spread on graham crackers. It is a great way to use up a little bit of frosting.
My Favorite Cake Recipes:
- Chocolate Raspberry Cake– This frosting works great on this cake in place of the ganache.
- Gluten Free Mayonnaise Cake

The Best Chocolate Frosting
This is the best chocolate frosting that I have made. It makes any cake even better.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup butter, room temperature
- 8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
- 1/2 cup baking cocoa
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 4 cups powdered sugar
Instructions
- Place butter and cream cheese in a mixing bowl beat until combined about 1 minute.
- Scrape down the sides and add cocoa and vanilla mix until combined.
- Slowly add powdered sugar and mix until well combined. I beat for a couple of minutes. I think the texture is lighter if you beat for a few minutes.
- Frost the cake and enjoy!
- This amount works for a 9x13 cake or a round layer cake.

If this recipe is like your other cream cheese frosting recipe (from the banana bars), I’m trying it. I loved those banana bars and the main reason was the frosting! Thanks for great chocolate stuff this week – the chocolate mousse recipe looks so easy and good, I’m going to try it.

Jill, this recipe is basically the choc. version of the one on the banana bars. It is so good. Let me know what you think. I love choc. if you can’t tell. 🙂

Oh my goodness, Lynn. This looks delicious. I so glad you posted something, after all. Yummy.

This looks so good! I have never added the cream cheese before to frosting…it sounds fantastic. I can not wait to try.

Thanks, I have been looking for a tasty gluten free frosting recipe. I have tried several others and they were just so-so. Rather than vanilla I may try the new mocha extract I just found…
Vanessa
Is the cream cheese like philadelphia style? what do you use?
Lynn
Yes that is the kind I use.

hmmmm, I must have done something incorrectly (added too much vanilla, I think) as mine was thin-ish. the flavor is there though. thanks for the recipe!
Lynn
You can always add a little more powdered sugar if it you think it is too thin.

Very yummy. I especially like how it is fluffy and spreads so well on a layer cake. It’s a keeper.

I completely agree on the homemade frosting thing, so much better than store bought! I needed a good choc frosting recipe for my husband’s birthday cake. This is so tasty! I can hardly keep the kids out of it….and I *might* be guilty of eating several large globs. 🙂 I hope we don’t eat it all before the cake is done!

Hey Lynn,
Im making a cake for my sisters graduation, would this frosting be suitable to ice the cake with then cover with fondant icing? Also do you have a specific sponge cake recipe that would make the perfect fondant covered cake?
Many Thanks x
Lynn
I am not sure on that. I have never worked more with fondant, so I really don’t know. Sorry I can’t help with that more.

Found this from Pinterest! I was a little concerned with chocolate cream cheese frosting (have you tried chocolate yogurt? I do not like that stuff at all), but I tried this recipe anyways because it really did look good, and yup, it was yummy! It reminded me of a milk chocolate type frosting because of the sweet creamyness! I doubled the recipe and was able to layer and frost a three layer 9 inch. Thanks for posting this!

Lynn,
Can you really taste the cream cheese in this or does it just add to the creaminess? My husband won’t eat anything with cream cheese but he loves chocolate so I’m trying to decide if I should try it. Thanks.
Lynn
You can taste the cream cheese in this. It is not strong because it is chocolate, but it is definitely there. My daughter makes a chocolate frosting that doesn’t contain cream cheese. I will try to share that sometime soon.
