Homemade tomato soup is a quick and easy version of one of the best comfort foods!
This is one of my favorite homemade soups to make. I have been making it for years. It is so easy to make and it contains ingredients that I always have on hand.
I first shared this recipe way back in 2008. It uses just a few basic pantry ingredients, so I thought it was a good time to share it again.
This recipe is based on one from a Martha Stewart magazine that I saw years ago. It caught my attention because of how easy it was to make and how budget friendly it was for a quick lunch or dinner.
I also love that this is a homemade version of a favorite food!
Our family does not eat much canned soup. I keep a few cans on hand for when we are sick or when I need a really fast lunch and I have nothing else to serve, but we don’t eat it often.
When I buy it, I buy either clam chowder or a chicken rice soup. One kind I don’t buy is tomato soup. None of us like canned tomato soup.
We don’t like it at all, but we love a good homemade tomato soup. It makes a nice healthy winter meal or a nice easy soup when we are sick.
I love eating this for lunch. I am not very good about eating lunch. I often just grab something quick and snack like for lunch, but I am trying to get better at that and sit down and eat something better for me.
This tomato soup has become of my favorite lunches during the fall and winter. I also made this soup when my mom was visiting because I knew she would love it, and she did.
I love to serve this with my oven grilled cheese sandwiches. Grilled cheese and tomato soup just seem to go together. It is also good with cheese quesadillas instead of grilled cheese.
My kids love this with some small pasta, like orzo or alphabet soup noodles added into the soup.
What Do I Need To Make Homemade Tomato Soup?
- butter
- oil
- onions
- garlic
- canned tomatoes
- chicken broth
- cream, milk, or 1/2 and 1/2 or you can leave it out for a dairy free version
- salt and pepper
This recipe has cream in it. I love it added in, but if you would like it dairy free just leave it out. And if I don’t have cream I just use milk or 1/2 and 1/2. It is not as rich and creamy with milk, but it does work.

What kind of canned tomatoes did you use? Diced?
Lynn
The recipe calls for whole tomatoes. I used whole because that is what I had. I think diced would work fine, though. Good ?.

Ooh…this sounds tasty!!!
I’ve tried to make tomato soup ONCE before. That was the day I KNEW my mother loved me. I put my steaming concoction into the blender, capped it up, and hit “Go”. The top blew off, the tomatoes hit the ceiling, the walls, the floor, the counter. My mother was in the next room practicing her piano. When she heard me scream, the first thing she said was, “Are you alright?” I was so relieved, I almost started to cry right there! I thought she’d be upset about the tomatoes all over her kitchen. (She wasn’t upset…as long as I cleaned up the mess. ;-))

Yes, you do have to be careful of hot liquids in the blender. Thanks for the reminder. 🙂

I found this recipe through a link on TipNut.com and just made it. It's so delicious! Thanks for sharing it.
I substituted half & half for the heavy cream and it's really quite good that way.
Lynn
Thanks for letting me know April. I am glad you liked it.

This soup is exceptional the only addition to the recipe I made was I added 1 tsp. of Basil and it tastes marvelous! And I serve it with grilled cheese as well. Thanks for the recipe and all the other great ones you have posted too. Thanks!

This is a great recipe and easy. I have also added a small amount of roasted red peppers into the soup before blending. It gives it a nice flavor. Just don’t add too much.
James
Got it simmering on the stove right now, can’t wait to try it 😀

Is this recipe something you could freeze and then use in a child’s lunch to go along with grilled cheese sandwiches?

My son love tomato souo and grill cheese. I want to try cut back on the canned processed food. This will be PERFECT. Can control the salt in it. And grill cheese is a must can’t wait to give it a try
Thanks!

This has been my go to tomato soup for years! Nothing like grilled cheese sandwiches and homemade tomato soup! Fast and easy – with none of the crap that’s in canned soup. (I add some basil and substitute coconut milk for the cream… Fabulous!!)
Lynn
I am so glad that you love this recipe too! And I agree it works well with coconut milk. I have done that many times for my daughter.

In the summer if I have more tomatoes than I can use I wash and quarter them, put in my crockpot and cook several hours. When done I use my immersion blender and purée them then I pass them thru a sieve to remove seeds, after cool, I freeze in quart bags. It’s so handy, saves food, and easy to finish as a soup or spaghetti sauce or useful in other recipes also. Really not much work but big benefits I think.
