Vintage recipes can be easy and delicious!
Vintage recipes are often looked down on because they are old and contain odd ingredients.
Discounting older recipes does them and us a disservice because many of them are easy and delicious recipes.
They are also often inexpensive to make because many of our grandparents and great-grandparents didn’t have a lot of money.
My grandma’s applesauce cookies are a great example of that.
These cookies are an old fashioned cookie recipe that is easy and delicious to make. The recipe also uses everyday ingredients that are not expensive.
This is a recipe that I wrote down back in before I was married and I have made them many times since then.
These cookies are not a fancy dessert. They are a fluffy cake like cookie. Like applesauce cake in a cookie form.
This is a cookie that I think you could easily eat for breakfast. Maybe not every day, but they would make a fun breakfast treat.
Can you make applesauce cookies gluten free?
Yes, these work great gluten free. In fact, I adapted this recipe to a gluten free applesauce cookie. The gluten free version is as good as the original version.

- walnuts
Applesauce Cookies
My grandmother's applesauce cookies are a classic old-fashioned applesauce cookie that uses everyday ingredients.
Ingredients
- 2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice ( see note for other options)
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 cup applesauce
- 1 cup raisins
- 1 cup chopped walnuts
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- In a bowl combine flour, baking powder, pumpkin pie spice, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
- Place butter and brown sugar in a bowl. Stir to combine using a wooden spoon. You do not want to use a mixer for these. The texture is better when mixed by hand.
- Stir until the mixture is creamy and well combined.
- Add egg and vanilla and stir to combine.
- Stir in half of the flour mixture.
- Add applesauce and stir.
- Add remaining flour and stir to combine well.
- Add raisins and walnuts and stir.
- Drop dough, about 1 or 1 1/2 tablespoons per cookie, onto cookie sheet.
- Bake for 10 - 11 minutes.
- Let set on cookie sheet for 2-3 minutes.
- Remove to wire rack to cool.
Notes
Instead of pumpkin pie spice you can use all cinnamon, which is what I usually do. Or you can use 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon cloves and ginger. Or about those ratios.
