Thoughts From an Eight Year Old On Being Frugal

I was talking to my daughter this week about buying some cookies at the store. She said to me, “Mom, I think you should save your money and make your own cookies.”

What insight from an eight year old! We are trying to teach our kids the value of money. She understands more then I realized she did. Why can’t more adults grasp this simple fact? Cooking and baking at home are almost always cheaper.
Not only is it cheaper, it is healthier. It really is not hard to make things at home. There are many things you can cook in a short amount of time. Simple dinners can be prepared in about the same time as it takes to go through a drive-thru. Cookies are easy to bake, even she realizes this. So my frugal advice is cook and bake at home. Think about what you are buying and if you could make it yourself for less.

A very smart and frugal-minded girl there. 🙂

You can also make bar cookies, which take less time than regular cookies.

Oh, a hot-gooey-chocolate-chip cookies sounds good right now!

A girl wise beyond her years! Homemade tastes a lot better, and it doesn’t have that weird ‘stuff’ they use to make cookies keep on the shelf.
BTW, if you make cookies…freeze about a dozen of the ‘dough balls.’ Then, in a few weeks when you have that urge for cookies, you can just pop the dough on a cookie sheet and bake without messing up the kitchen!

I LOVE it when the things we’ve taught our kids come back around! Oooh and homemade cookies are SO much yummier anyway!

That is so wonderful. I have an 8 year old, and she sounds just like yours. We saw a commercial the other day for a restaurant advertising a $10 meal and how it was such a great deal. She smirked and said “how is that a great deal? One meal for ten dollars! You feed our family of 6 for ten dollars for the whole day!” What a great feeling it is to know that these lessons and things we are doing are having an impact on our children, isn’t it?
