We recently bought and tried this. I have actually had it before, but it has been years. I will give you one hint, it is not caramel or caramel sauce.
Do you know what it is?

I’m guessing dulce de leche? Looks yummy!
My first instinct is cajeta but I guess that technically is a caramel:/
Or could it be brown rice or golden syrup? Never tried those…..
Brown rice syrup? It doesn’t look dark enough to be dulce de leche.
Miso or Some kind of Honey
How about honey butter?
It looks like cajeta to me.
is it agave
Sorgham?
Brown gravy?
Is it Guava nectar?
Looks like raw honey to me!
Creamed honey?
brown rice syrup!
My guess is hot buttered rum mix. Or Tom and Jerry’s.
Espagnole?
I’m thinking a liquid chicken stock concentrate??
That was my first thought too. Can’t wait to see!
Looks like brown rice syrup
Looks like whipped honey.
I would guess dulce de leche…
I was going to guess miso.
I’m thinking dulce de leche, which I think is the same as cajeta.
Well it could be sorghum because I have seen it really dark to a light brown like this. I was also going to say dulce de leche but not sure because I have never actually seen it except on top of the Jello pudding cups – Dulce De Leche Flavor. I have never heard of cajeta and have never cooked with any of the other. It isn’t the right consistency or color for honey butter as in butter melted with honey but it does look like honey with wax melted into it. So I am going to play my “I have no idea and I can’t wait to find out” card! I enjoy your What is it Wednesdays as well as the rest but Wednesday is my favorite day!
I’m going to guess powdered honey that has been rehydrated. 🙂
As much as your family likes to try Mexican foods, I am guessing dulce de leche. I’ve seen recipes for making it from simmering a can of sweetened condensed milk (even crockpot for ease). Has anyone tried this?
Someone else mentioned sorghum, and I know it’s not that since I use that in my own baking here and there.
I doubt this family would be trying miso, since traditional preparations involve fermentation of several gluten-containing grains.
I’m going with dulce de leche.
Dineen, I have made it with condensed milk in boiling water, haven’t tried the crock pot but will next time. In the pan with water, the longer you simmer it the thicker it gets, at about 2 1/2 hours it is perfect for spreading and too thick for pouring.
Some kind of demiglace? Concentrated stock?
I’m going with the creamed honey! That was my first thought when I say it anyway… It is yummy, btw!!!! :o)
It looks like raw honey to me. It looks delcious!
My first instinct was brown rice syrup…going with that!
Honey Butter
I’m Canadian and the first thing I thought of was maple butter.
raw honey?
Is it a glue?
creamed honey would be my guess…
I will say butterscotch.
looks like dulce de leche to me!!
spun honey
